Sky Sports: Everton takeover now agreed as Moshiri accepts offer

Farhad Moshiri has now accepted an Everton takeover offer from Dan Friedkin which arrived last week, according to Sky Sports.

The outlet reported via their website on 14 June that a deal for the Roma owner, who is worth an estimated £4.8billion, to buy the Toffees has now been agreed and he is expected to be granted exclusivity to complete the deal in the next “24-48 hours”.

American Friedkin, 59, has jumped ahead of four rival bids, with Evertonian businessmen Andy Bell and George Downing, who had appeared likely winners of the race just days ago, their fellow club creditors MSP Sports Capital, a consortium led by Vatche Manoukian, and most recently another UK-based bid backed by a pair of billionaires from Vici Private Finance [Times, 14 June] all bypassed.

According to The Telegraph (14 June) the bid is an all-equity offer which has turned Moshiri’s head in the film producer’s favour.

Everton set for new exclusive buyers after 777 Partners collapse

The Everton takeover race is nothing if not unpredictable and the fact that it is Friedkin who has leapt to the front of the queue didn’t look the most likely outcome.

His ownership of Roma since 2020, who won the Europa Conference League with Jose Mourinho in charge in 2022, was predicted to be a key hurdle for a Toffees deal.

The Esk shared on the Talking the Blues podcast (8 June) that he’d been told Friedkin’s group were concerned about UEFA looking into multi-club groups and the complications that might result from that down the line.

So how that issue is navigated in the Italian capital or on Merseyside remains to be seen, but it appears whatever fears the American had hasn’t proven to be a barrier to him coming forward and making what looks like the winning bid.

In theory there is more money to be made from ownership of a Premier League club but it will surely take some work to clear up the complicated financial picture at Goodison Park first to get to that point, and Roma are regular qualifiers for European football already.

It would appear to be a strong demonstration of the enduring attractiveness the Toffees, and the English top flight, holds for investors.

So assuming this bid ultimately gets over the line in the way 777 Partners’ never did fans will have to hope Friedkin is in it for the right reasons.

In other Everton news, another Toffees star has been the subject of a transfer approach and is expected to leave according to Alan Myers.
