Wolves fans can expect a defensively minded approach from new boss Vitor Pereira after he has taken over from Gary O’Neil at Molineux Stadium.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who regularly covers the Saudi Pro League for broadcasters, claims the 56-year-old is a “top manager.”
The former Al Shabab boss took charge of his first training session on Thursday and brings a wide range of experience from coaching in Portugal, Greece, and China throughout his career.
Pereira will be tasked with attempting to keep the Midlands giants in the Premier League with the club currently 19th in the table with the worst defensive record in the division.
Pereira will now look to make an immediate impact as he takes charge of the team for the first time on Sunday (22 December) against fellow struggles Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Vitor Pereira is expected to give Wolves a fighting chance
“He gives them a chance,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“For people that don’t know much about Pereira, he’s an obsessive football manager, he loves football.
“He nearly came to England two or three times, but he’s impatient to get a job elsewhere, he said he’s always wanted to manage in the Premier League.
“It’s been his obsession or his dream to manage in the Premier League, but it didn’t come to fruition because he left and went to other jobs, he didn’t wait, he wasn’t patient enough.
“I cover a lot of the Saudi Pro League and I’ve watched him [at] Al-Shabaab this season.
“Al-Shabaab are [an] average to a lower team, he’s a defensive, defensively minded coach, his teams are resilient, they’re hard to beat.
“He’s won two titles in Portugal with Porto, he’s won a title with Olympiakos.
“He’s a very experienced manager and if he’ll be obsessed, he’ll drill his team to the nth degree on defending, to not conceding goals.
“[He] Likes to play a 4-1-4-1 formation, if I was a Wolves fan and I did your homework and I have a read up about him, I’d be quite excited about him coming in thinking we’ve got a chance here with this group of players.
“With a manager like him coming in, I really do think it gives them a chance, he’s a top manager.”
