Rangers were the subject of an Alan Brazil joke after recently-departed star Sam Lammers scored for FC Twente against Manchester United in the Europa League.
Speaking on talkSPORT with Ally McCoist and Gabby Agbonlahor (26 September, 9:56am), Brazil joked that Lammers left Ibrox because the Gers couldn’t afford his alleged £12,000 per week wage demands.
Lammers was sold to Twente for £4million in July, having spent the second half of his solitary season in Glasgow on loan at FC Utrecht, and returned to the UK to score in Wednesday’s (25 September) 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
McCoist said: “Did you see the Manchester United game last night? You wouldn’t believe it, the boy Rangers sold scored the equaliser.”
Agbonlahor then asked: “Why’d you let him go Ally? Top player him.”
Brazil chimed in last, saying: “Gabby, he wanted too much money – he wanted £12,000-a-week!”
Could Rangers be left to rue selling Sam Lammers?
Brazil’s verdict on Lammers’ wage demands are quite out of kilter with the supposed £18,000-per-week Lammers was earning at Ibrox [SalarySport], but his spell in Glasgow was a clear disappointment.
Lammers arrived at the Gers as one of their big-money summer signings just 12 months prior, but was unable to make much impact whatsoever, scoring just twice in 31 appearances across all competitions.
A versatile forward capable of playing across the frontline, Lammers had the potential to give Philippe Clement some much-needed attacking depth this season, but was sold before he got the chance.
Rangers sending Lammers out on loan to Utrecht just a matter of weeks into Clement’s tenure implied the 27-year-old’s Ibrox career was all-but done very early on, and this was sealed in the summer.
A trip to Old Trafford in January also awaits the Gers in the league phase of this season’s Europa League, and Clement will be hoping that Lammers’ goal is a sign of things to come for his current crop of players.
