Rangers paid the Scottish Football Association £67,000 to play home matches at Hampden Park during the Ibrox construction, the club have confirmed.
The Gers released their latest annual report on Tuesday (29 October) for the financial year ending 30 June, 2023 with the club operating at a £17million loss for the period.
Philippe Clement’s side began the 2024/25 campaign at Hampden Park this season as the redevelopment of the Copland Road stand was delayed heading into the new season.
Rangers paid the price for Hampden Road heartbreak
Rangers endured a torrid time at Hampden Park at the start of the season, with many believing the venue to be the sole reason the side crashed out of Champions League qualification at the hands of Dynamo Kyiv.
The Light Blues have hardly set the SPFL alight since returning to Ibrox, but still, the 4-0 win against FCSB in the Europa League was proof of how effective the Ibrox crowd can be under the lights in Europe.
While the fee paid to occupy Hampden Park is small in the grand scheme of things, the revelation is the latest in a long line of financial mismanagement by the board as the financial landscape in Glasgow looks as bleak as ever.
Indeed, the Gers are so scarred from the delayed construction of the Copland Stand, that plans to redevelop Broomloan Road are set to be put on the backburner with the club eager to avoid a similar situation next year.
However, Rangers have since taken strides to improve the worrying finances, securing what is considered the “biggest” deal in Scottish football, with the Kindred Group sponsorship deal expected to generate £3m of per annual revenue [Four Lads].
The time spent at Hampden Park will feel like a fever dream to the Rangers faithful. The fact the club paid for the displeasure of hosting home matches at the venue is not a good look but with a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Aberdeen next in the SPFL on Wednesday [30 October], the fee paid is the least of the worries at Ibrox.
