Alan Brazil mocks Rangers finances in £80,000 transfer budget dig

Alan Brazil took a swipe at Rangers on talkSPORT by joking that they’ll have just £80,000 to spend in the January transfer window.

Speaking on talkSPORT with Ally McCoist (26 September, 9:55am), Brazil made a dig towards the club’s financial situation by saying that he’d seen a newspaper report detailing their meagre transfer budget.

The Gers’ off-field difficulties and ongoing boardroom struggle have led to questions over their long-term spending power, while across Glasgow, Celtic’s finances are going from strength to strength [Tom English, 24 September].

Brazil said to McCoist: “Big bit in the paper today – they reckon you’ll have £80,000 to spend in January!”

Rangers finances are no laughing matter for Philippe Clement

It’s safe to say that the Ibrox hierarchy will be able to muster up more than £80,000 for Clement to spend in the upcoming transfer window, but it’s unlikely that the Belgian will receive millions upon millions.

Clement led much-needed overhaul of the Gers squad over the summer, jettisoning several senior players and making 11 new signings, but many of these were on loan deals or free transfers.

Mohamed Diomande, Hamza Igamane, Robin Propper and Nedim Bajrami were the only players who the club spent seven figures on, with a further £4million committed to make Oscar Cortes’ loan permanent [Daily Record, 4 June].

Despite these outlays, the policy towards the end of the transfer window appeared to be ‘one in, one out’, with Bajrami’s Deadline Day arrival only coming after Todd Cantwell departed for Blackburn.

It remains to be seen how much support Clement will be able to call upon from a boardroom currently in turmoil, but the Belgian won’t be holding his breath unless major changes occur upstairs.
