Steven Gerrard would be hesitant to return to Rangers due to the ongoing chaos on the Ibrox board, Alan Brazil and Dean Saunders have said.
Speaking on talkSPORT (6 November, 6:50am), the two pundits discussed the title winner pitching back up at Ibrox, amid increasing pressure on incumbent boss Philippe Clement.
Gerrard is also facing the prospect of the sack at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, but Brazil and Saunders agreed the 44-year-old would be hesitant to come back to his former club in its current state.
Brazil said: “Gerrard’s done well with Rangers – would he go back there? Because they’re struggling.”
Saunders agreed: “He did well at Rangers no matter what you say, he won the title there – so they’re struggling right now.
“I think the crowd are turning against the current manager, but they’ve got all sorts of problems in the boardroom haven’t they.”
Brazil replied: “I’ve said it for how many, how long have I been saying that?”
Saunders continued: “I don’t know whether Steven should put himself in that situation because there’s no chairman, no director of football, nothing there.”
Steven Gerrard to return to Rangers?
While Gerrard’s career since leaving Ibrox three years ago has been on anything but an upward trajectory, the same can be said for the Gers’ situation on and off the field, particularly in the dugout.
Three managers have been appointed since Gerrard moved to Aston Villa in November 2021, with replacements Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale both being sacked around this time of year.
Clement remains in post for the time being despite coming under increasing pressure from Celtic and surprise packages Aberdeen, both of whom are nine points clear of the Bears in the Premiership table.
Clement could well become the first Gerrard successor in three attempts to make it into a third calendar year at Ibrox, however, that’s in large part down to the sheer lack of decision-makers above him.
A board running on fumes amid a plethora of key vacancies looks to be in no position to decide on his future at present, but replacing him with Gerrard shortly may just restore their credibility with the Ibrox faithful.
In other Rangers news, one of Clement’s key men has been told to become less “predictable” after recent performances.
