Rangers need to be wary of Olympiacos’ hunger for further continental glory ahead of their UEFA Europa League clash on Thursday, John McGarry has said.
The Light Blues lock horns with Olympiacos at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in their fourth Europa League group-stage game on 7 November.
While both teams are level on points having won two and lost one of their three games, the Athens-based club is keen to follow their UEFA Conference League success last season with glory in the Europa League, which McGarry reckons is bad news for the Gers.
“Like Rangers, [Jose Luis] Mendilibar’s men found Lyon too hot to handle, but have gleaned six points from Braga and Malmo,” McGarry wrote in his column on the Scottish Daily Mail‘s print edition (6 November, page 66).
“The bad news for Philippe Clement’s side as they prepare for the hostility of the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium tomorrow is that the mother of all parties [that followed their success in the Conference League] has not affected the Greeks’ appetite for another one.”
Philippe Clement given bad news ahead of Rangers v Olympiacos
It has not been smooth sailing for Philippe Clement at Ibrox recently, with the club struggling on and off the pitch due to well-documented issues.
Rangers have fallen nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership and the Belgian risks facing the sack if things do not fall in place soon.
The Light Blues earned a place in the League Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Motherwell at the weekend, but the performance was far from convincing.
All eyes are, therefore, on Clement and Co. to see if they will step up under the lights in Athens on Thursday.
Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side have won three of their last four games in all competitions and are expected to be backed by a “fiery” crowd on Thursday.
A win would be a huge boost of confidence for Rangers and would buy Clement some time to set things straight in Govan.
In other Rangers news, the club have been handed an early “blow” ahead of December clashes with Tottenham and Celtic.
