Pundit View: Rangers would be 'Ridiculously Stupid' to not try and appoint one manager

Ryan Stevenson believes Rangers would be “ridiculously stupid” not to try and appoint Derek McInnes as their next possible manager.

The Scotsman is currently in charge of Kilmarnock, who recently beat the Gers 1-0 in the Scottish Premiership on 20 October.

Philippe Clement is under pressure at the Light Blues after a poor start to the season, and writing in the Daily Record [6 November], Stevenson admits they are crying out for someone like McInnes.

“I think Rangers will be ridiculously stupid not to try to take him from Rugby Park when, inevitably, they end up looking for their next manager,” he wrote.

“Which will probably be sooner rather than later. They are crying out for a manager of Derek’s calibre – a throwback to the days of Walter Smith and a man who gets the DNA of that particular club.”

Philippe Clement taking Rangers nowhere

Clement replaced Michael Beale last year and went on an impressive run, winning the Scottish League Cup and pushing for the title.

This season, the Light Blues have looked devoid of enthusiasm and are already nine points behind Aberdeen and their nearest rivals at the top of the table.

The performances haven’t been great by any stretch, with the Bears having to make a second-half comeback to get the win over Motherwell in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final on 3 November.

Derek McInnes is at Kilmarnock.

McInnes seems like a decent option due to his connection with Rangers as a player, but the 53-year-old hasn’t had much success in terms of silverware during his stint as a manager.

While Clement looks to be out of his depth, could McInnes be the one to take the Gers back to competing with Brendan Rodgers’ team? Only time will tell.

Clement is still in charge for now, but it will take a massive turnaround to keep it that way, it seems.

In other Rangers news, the club have been hit by a ‘massive blow’ from Tottenham, with fans not looking forward to the Celtic clash.
