Alan Stubbs has urged Everton to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin if it means keeping Jarrad Branthwaite at Goodison Park.
The Toffees legend believes that the striker’s body language suggests he is looking for a Goodison Park exit before the summer transfer window shuts, with Newcastle United still being linked with a move [Graeme Bailey].
Branthwaite is another player who has been heavily linked with an exit, with the latest rumours connecting him with a controversial move to Liverpool [Liverpool Echo], but Stubbs is desperate for the defender to stay.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (19 August, 7:43am), he said: “Everton cannot lose Branthwaite. They cannot lose him. Calvert-Lewin, I’m not so sure – I don’t think his body language is great.
“He looks like a player looking elsewhere, and if that’s the case Everton need to cash in and look at someone else. Everton need to bring players in, there’s no doubt about that.
“At least one player will go and if I had a choice it would be Dominic Calvert-Lewin, just because of his body language.”
Everton to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin before August 30?
The 27-year-old striker has divided opinion at Goodison Park this summer, with fans arguing over whether the club should keep him or cash in, given he has entered the last 12 months of his contract.
However, if selling Calvert-Lewin would mean keeping Branthwaite, the decision is an absolute no-brainer, and Stubbs has his verdict down to a tee.
The Toffees’ defence was the biggest positive last season, with the trio of Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford only conceding more goals than Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
In the attacking third, on the other hand, Sean Dyche’s side struggled in terms of goals, with Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure sharing the spoils as top goalscorer in the Premier League last season.
The former notched four goals in his final seven league matches of the 2023/24 campaign, boosting his record at the perfect moment, but the rest of the season would have come as a concern.
If Everton were able to find a replacement before the 30 August deadline, it could be an easy decision to get rid of Calvert-Lewin.
In other Everton news, Jeff Stelling is adamant over a new Sean Dyche sacking verdict as a replacement was mooted at Goodison Park.
