Alfie Devine in talks to exit Tottenham for club abroad

Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine is the subject of serious interest from Belgian side Westerlo, according to Paul O Keefe.

The journalist reported on his X account [3 September] that the Jupiler Pro League side are leading the race to sign the midfielder on a season-long loan deal, with talks ongoing.

Devine is drawing interest from other sides in Belgium too, as he prepares to leave Tottenham in search of regular first-team football this season.

“Alfie Devine subject to serious interest from Westerlo in Belgium who are leading the race for him to join on loan,” O Keefe said. “Talks continue. Other interested parties in Belgium too.”

Another loan move appears to be on the cards for Devine this season after an underwhelming spell at Plymouth Argyle last term.

Ange Postecoglou has a huge decision to make on the 20-year-old. He will need to find the right club to unlock the potential of his midfield prospect after his spell in the Championship left those within Tottenham frustrated with his development.

Spurs are well-stocked in the engine room with Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and summer signing Archie Gray all ahead of Devine in the pecking order.

His minutes will be limited if he remains in North London this season and he needs to find regular playing time as he approaches the make-or-break years of his development.

It seems all but certain that Devine will leave Tottenham for the year. The move will be in the best interest of all parties but it cannot be understated the importance that the midfielder performs this season.

Westerlo, while not one of the best sides in Belgium, could be the perfect environment for Devine to make a statement to Postecoglou.

The club clearly values his potential and will need assurances from any interested party before a move is sanctioned.
