'Amazing' 'Brilliant' - BBC pundit blown away by Rangers pair in 2-1 win v St Mirren

Vaclav Cerny and Nedim Bajrami combined to stun Steven Thompson in the second half of the 2-1 Rangers win over St Mirren.

The BBC pundit reacted live on Sportsound on 27 October as the pair of summer signings linked up in the 76th minute, with Cerny firing an inch-perfect cross-field pass from the right flank to the left for his teammate.

Bajrami instantly controlled the ball on the run and advanced into the area from the left, cutting onto his right foot for a shot, with ex-Ibrox striker Thompson delighted with the show of quality in an otherwise pretty atrocious game.

He said (4.37pm): “It was an amazing ball from Cerny”.

“And what a touch as well,” added commentator Thomas Duncan.

“It was, brilliant touch as well,” agreed Thompson.

Philippe Clement signings impress in turgid Rangers win

Aside from the switch of play from the Czech loanee to the Albanian Deadline Day signing, and Cyriel Dessers’ burst into the box to set up Cerny’s winner, there was very little to write home about for Rangers.

Following the blistering 4-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League in midweek (24 October) this was a worrying reversion back to the sort of sluggish domestic display which saw the Light Blues beaten 1-0 at Kilmarnock last week to put Philippe Clement’s job in question.

The Belgian had actually named a starting XI which looked to be as close to what many fans have been hoping for this season, with James Tavernier rested for Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Hamza Igamane preferred to Dessers up front, while Nico Raskin partnered Connor Barron behind Mohamed Diomande in midfield, with the latter opening the scoring against the run of play.

The only question mark was John Souttar missing from the squad altogether and Robin Propper starting alongside Leon Balogun, and the Dutchman duly dropped an absolutely horror show of a display.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement signed the two attackers during the summer.

He has been a disappointing signing throughout this season so far, while Igamane missed his opportunity to stake a claim for further starts after scoring his first for the club on Thursday.

Even Jefte, who has largely been solid this term, had a poor day while Kasanwirjo was up and down as he was shifted between positions.

So it was a relief that at least two Clement’s summer signings showed some quality with the second-half move, although Barron was also pretty good.

But on the whole there was far more to be concerned about from this display, and won’t inspire much confidence ahead of the key clash at Pittodrie in three days against Aberdeen.

In other Rangers news, a senior Light Blues player has been told he has to leave the club.
