Andy Newport doesn’t think Philippe Clement will be sacked by Rangers until Patrick Stewart takes on his role in December.
The former Manchester United chief has already been hired for the role, but he won’t officially become their CEO until the day after the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic, which will be on 16 December.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (27 November), Newport shared his thoughts on a potential sack timeline for the Belgian.
“A result tomorrow [against Nice] might buy him a bit more time but I still don’t think his fate will be decided until Patrick Stewart comes in the day after the final,” he said.
“I think he might lump on for another few weeks yet but I think you just need to speak to supporters to realise how they’re feeling about him.
“I think when it gets to that stage, usually directors aren’t too far behind because they know if they don’t sack their manager, they’re the next ones in the firing line.”
Rangers seem to finally be taking steps in the right direction
The behind-the-scenes work that has been going on at Ibrox since the start of the season has left the Gers in a bit of a pickle.
First, James Bisgrove left to pursue an opportunity in Saudi Arabia, then former chairman John Bennett was forced to resign from his role due to health problems and then Creag Robertson followed him not long after.
All these departures have left the Gers with a lack of staff members to call the shots at the club and has forced people such as Philippe Clement to take the vast majority of flak from fans, pundits and supporters.
With Stewart’s appointment now confirmed, however, it finally feels like the club are getting back on track and are trying to create some sort of stability at Ibrox to allow their team to thrive once again.
Only time will tell what the future has in store for the club but as long as nobody else leaves and they keep adding senior members to their backroom staff, things should hopefully start to look up in the near future.
