Philippe Clement appears to be putting out the buffers on his reign with his recent “reality” comments about the recent struggles at Rangers.
Clement has hit back at those suggesting the Ibrox rebuild has been ongoing for one year, arguing it has instead been “four months” as the Belgian takes his first few talks with incoming CEO Patrick Stewart.
But it seems merely an attempt to shroud himself in a degree of protection from the criticism and pressure which has defined his reign this season.
As quoted by Football Scotland [27 November], Clement said: “Everybody’s talking about one year, and it’s not a reality. It’s four months now that there’s been a rebuild.
“A lot of things changed in the club, so going back to that again; a chairman who’s not there anymore, a CEO not there anymore, a director of operations not there anymore, an academy director not there anymore and a lot of other people also in the club.
“So referring to one year, it’s not correct. It’s about the last four or five months, a lot of changes have been made. 16 players in the squad, building a new squad ,and adapting the players towards what Rangers is about.”
Rangers fans know what they’ve seen
While it’s the obvious move for Clement from a personal PR perspective that he will always play down any “crisis” talk, the idea the rebuild at Rangers only began in the summer will not wash.
Gers fans have seen their club falter on the pitch and particularly off it since Clement arrived – though the latter has not been the fault of the 50-year-old.
The club had previously been in freefall under Michael Beale after he had essentially been handed the Ibrox keys on a silver platter; change was absolutely right, but now Clement must deliver in the coming months.
Supporters have lived and breathed it – they’re not getting the wool pulled over their eyes. That said, the changes Clement refers to at the club could allow him the platform to turn things around and become a successful manager in Glasgow.
But these changes have dragged on, the club have let their fans down on multiple occasions and Clement as a custodian of the Light Blues’ fortunes has to shoulder some of that blame without making what will be perceived to be excuses.
In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd has made a firm prediction on the Gers this season.
