Exclusive: Man United plot raid to sign Wolves star

Man United are plotting a move to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha in next summer’s transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old has caught the eye of the Red Devils’ scouting team after his excellent start to the season at Molineux despite Wolves’ struggles.

He added to his seven goals and three assists in 12 games so far with a stunning brace in a 4-1 win against Fulham, pleasing the scouts in attendance.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in October that “top clubs” were tracking the Brazilian as a cut-price deal could be on the cards.

Now, United are believed to have placed Cunha high on their list of targets to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s side after his recent displays.

The new boss began his reign with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road, and the addition of a new forward has already been earmarked as a priority signing.

However, they will be made to wait until the end of the season as Wolves will not sanction a deal for his exit in January.

Man United scouts watching Matheus Cunha after Wolves displays

Cunha’s current contract at Molineux is set to run until 2027, placing no pressure on the club to sell him as they hold the power over his future as things stand.

Since joining the Black Country club from Atletico Madrid in 2023, he has racked up 23 goals and 12 assists in 69 appearances.

Meanwhile, he has also collected 11 caps for Brazil – most recently in October 2023.

That experience both in England on the the international stage is regarded as a valuable commodity to add to the United squad amid a number of inexperienced stars.

He is also viewed as the perfect forward for Amorim’s system thanks to his ability to play as a striker or as either of the attacking midfielders behind the striker.

Cunha’s pressing capabilities, speed, creativity and goalscoring touch are said to have placed him near the top of United’s list of targets and they are set to keep a close eye on his progress over the course of the season before making a move.
