Sean Dyche needs to show he can play a more expansive brand of football to “convince” the Friedkins he deserves a new contract at Everton, according to Chris Beesley.
The Toffees’ boss is set to exit Goodison Park at the end of the season when his contract with the Blues expires, with most expecting the Friedkin Group to appoint their own manager next summer [Phil McNulty, 4 November].
While it would be a surprise to pundits and fans alike if Dyche were to pen a new deal under the new ownership, Liverpool Echo journalist Beesley has mooted the terms for any potential extension.
Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (6 November, 29:15) he said: “Allardyce wasn’t able to kick on and show that he was able to play a more progressive style of football.
“I think that’s what is happening to Dyche now. They’re still playing in that way when it was the relegation fight in his first season and that was ok then because it was getting them across the line.
“Now, you’ve got those more expansive players, there’s a hope. Nobody expected amazing things in Goodison’s last season but at least that it be a little bit more enjoyable from a game-to-game basis and it hasn’t been.
“It’s been a real slog for those supporters and I think that’s part of the frustration now. I think Dyche needs to do that to convince the Friedkins if he’s going to give them any sort of argument that he deserves a new contract in the new stadium.”
Will Everton sack Sean Dyche amid Goodison Park exit speculation?
For journalists, fans and pundits alike, it does feel as though this is the end of the road for Dyche at Goodison Park.
The Englishman has done exactly what he was brought in to do. He has stabilised the Toffees in the Premier League and avoided relegation to the Championship despite facing more off-the-field issues than anyone would have imagined.
He deserves credit for that and he remains the right man to see the Blues through to the end of this season, but that doesn’t mean that the Friedkins should be rushing to extend his stay on Merseyside.
Even if Dyche shows that he is capable of playing a more adventurous and attractive brand of football, it may be too little too late for supporters who are now hoping for a change of manager at the end of the campaign.
It feels like it will take something remarkable to pull the majority of fans back on side before Dyche’s contract expires.
