Scott McDonald believes Ange Postecoglou saved his Tottenham job with the EFL Cup win against Manchester City on Wednesday 30 October.
Spurs progressed into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup with a remarkable 2-1 victory over City at home on Wednesday evening, thanks to first-half goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr.
McDonald reckons the result might have “prolonged” Postecoglou’s time in North London and added that there would have been “serious” talks about sacking him had the result not gone Tottenham’s way.
“He’s prolonged his term at Tottenham with this win, I think, as well because if they had lost this one then there would have been serious talks about his position”, McDonald said on Optus Sport’s Football Bite show (31 October).
“Their performances in the Premier League, obviously not getting the results lately, the pressure builds very, very quickly if you know.
“It’s harsh in the Premier League, you’re only a couple of bad results away from losing it.”
Is Ange Postecoglou’s job at Tottenham under threat?
McDonald is right about Tottenham’s performances in the Premier League leaving a lot to be desired as they lost two of their league games in October.
Trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace were games that Spurs were expected to win, but they returned home empty-handed on both occasions, leaving the club eighth in the table.
However, talk about Postecoglou facing the sack at Tottenham is premature as the team have fared largely well in cup competitions.
The North London outfit are only one of three clubs to have won each of their three UEFA Europa League games, while they now prepare to take on Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals in December.
Postecoglou’s comments about always delivering a trophy in his second season at a club (Sky Sports, 17 September) notably garnered a lot of media attention.
This remains a realistic possibility and for the time being it is hard to see why the Spurs hierarchy would not trust the former Celtic boss.
