John Wenham has speculated that Tottenham striker Alejo Véliz could join an EFL club on loan next season as the striker struggles in La Liga.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose thinks the 21-year-old should have been sent to the Championship this season.
Véliz is currently playing his football in Spain with Espanyol, where he is a regular, having started eight of the club’s 11 league matches this term. However, he has managed just one goal in that time.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t understand why the Argentinian was signed in the first place.
“I thought he was a strange signing if I’m being honest,” Wenham said.
“He just seemed like a path blocker for Will Lankshear, especially with the two players possessing very similar attributes.
“If this loan doesn’t go well, it looks like it’ll be another loan next season, but this time further down the football pyramid in England.
“This will be two loan spells which haven’t worked out for him. However, there is still a lot of the season left and hopefully, he will turn things around.
“Even before he was sent to Spain, I’d have much rather he joined a Championship club. Coming directly from Argentina to England is a huge jump.
“Therefore, I’d have thought he’d be better suited spending some time in England.”
Alejo Véliz set for third loan spell since joining Tottenham?
Véliz will be turning 22 next season. Therefore, it is slightly confusing to see what Spurs’ plan is for the young forward.
Having invested a considerable amount of money in bringing him to the club, Tottenham surely won’t want to give up on him.
However, a third loan spell since signing for Spurs would not be ideal. After his miserable time with Sevilla, which is thought to have damaged the relationship between Spurs and the Spanish club, Véliz started this season with Espanyol on a bright note. However, he seems to have struggled since, which will be a concern for Postecoglou.
Tottenham will want to have some clarity on the player, which means a decision will need to be made soon.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has decided on Timo Werner’s permanent future at the club.
