Anthony Gordon breaks silence on Everton v Newcastle penalty incident

Anthony Gordon has taken to social media to speak out following his crucial penalty miss for Newcastle United on his return to Everton.

The winger published a post on his Instagram page [6 October] the morning after the goalless draw between the two sides, illustrated by Jordan Pickford’s save to deny his England teammate from the spot.

Gordon was the focus of plenty of crowd hostility at Goodison Park, having acrimoniously left the club for Tyneside in January 2023.

The 23-year-old posted: “A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me. Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team. Thanks to everyone that travelled – till next time.”

Anthony Gordon blows chance to silence Everton fans

Gordon was always going to be a figure in laser focus as he returned to his hometown to play in front of the supporters who once adored him.

The pantomime villain sketch was intensified when the first-half penalty was awarded after James Tarkoswki’s foul on Sandro Tonali, and became a long-time memory when Pickford correctly dived to his left to thwart the spot-kick.

Many felt Everton should have had a penalty of their own when Dominic Calvert-Lewin looked to have been fouled by Dan Burn, but Craig Pawson decided against the call following a long VAR review.

Gordon should have wrapped up the points for Newcastle in the second half, too, missing a golden opportunity after getting in behind the Toffees’ defence.

Sean Dyche’s side rode their luck at times but will be content with the point, and for the Gwladys Street End who witnessed the save close up, it will feel much more like a victory – even if just a personal one.

It’s another point in the bank ahead of the international break and signals something of a change for the Blues, who you feel would likely have lost this game some weeks back – progress remains progress.

In other Everton news, Dyche explains the purpose of his appointment at the club.
