Sean Dyche’s appears to have articulated why his time at Everton is likely to end after a takeover is completed.

The Friedkin Group have agreed a buyout of Farhad Moshiri and the entire process is predicted to be completed within a few months [Giulia Bould, 26 September].

And with Dyche’s job already heavily called into question this season after a nightmare set of results in the Premier League it is inevitable his future would be in focus as the man who appointed him looks set to leave the club.

The ex-Burnley boss has stated publicly that he would like to stay on once the Americans take charge on Merseyside [Daily Mail, 26 September], but according to Paul Joyce in The Times on 26 September he knows privately he has a battle on his hands to convince he can be the man for the long term.

Dan Friedkin likely to change Everton manager

Now, whether he meant to or not, he has now explained as well as anyone why Dan Friedkin and company are likely to go in another direction instead.

Dyche told Vinny O’Connor for Sky Sports on 5 October: “I don’t think it’s about dreams, dreams are for a different time. I got bought in here for reality.

“They didn’t tell me in them words, but reading between the lines I got bought in here for the reality of the situation and the ongoing situation.

“When I look back, obviously it was a lot worse than I thought, but I think I was bought in here for reality. Dreams are for another day but at this stage it’s still reality.

“In anyone’s tenure at a football club the idea is you leave your print on it. We don’t know what’s gonna come next, if The Friedkin Group come in that might change things, but we don’t know that until it happens in it’s entirety, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Friedkin Group have agreed a deal to buy Everton.

Dyche may have been defending himself against criticisms of his style and his results over the past year and a half, and he makes a fair point that he has been putting out fires in an unenviable position at Goodison Park.

But after years of nightmares in the latter part of the Moshiri era the fans do want to dream after the club changes hands and the Friedkins are certain to want to tap into that.

The Roma chiefs aren’t trying to buy the club because they want to get a slice of regular relegation battles, they are doing so because they want to reap the rewards of a successful Premier League club and, for owners and fans, the takeover is supposed to herald a new era.

Maurizio Sarri linked to Toffees

Maurizio Sarri
Maurizio Sarri has been mooted as potential Everton manager.

The incumbent manager, who is already frustrating supporters with his methods, is very unlikely to be handed the keys when the change of ownership is a major opportunity for a reset, at the end of the season at least.

Dyche’s contract runs out in the summer and the likes of Maurizio Sarri has already been linked to Everton as they move into their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium next term [Corriere dello Sport, 25 September].

The Toffees manager absolutely has his merits in the top flight but, as he says, he was brought in to do a job in a particularly difficult situation, not to spearhead a new era of optimism, so it is very hard to escape the conclusion that once that situation is over he will be moved on.

He deserves a lot of credit for keeping the club above water but if TFG’s takeover is completed he will likely be thanked and sent on his way, and it sounds like he knows that.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have shelved behind-the-scenes plans for Dele Alli after a new injury set back.
