West Ham are monitoring Gent full-back Archie Brown as an option to improve their defensive quality, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Brown has been linked with a move back to England “for a long time.”
The 22-year-old is thriving in Belgium and has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice and providing four assists.
West Ham are in the market for a full-back in January, as it has been identified as an area of the team that the club wants to strengthen.
The Hammers also want to lower the average age of the squad, which is another box that Brown would tick.
However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that it will be a “difficult race” for West Ham to win due to the growing interest in Brown from other teams.
West Ham want to sign a full-back like Archie Brown
Brown is an ideal target for the Londoners, but he is not the only full-back that the club are monitoring at the moment.
The speedy full-back hasn’t been able to secure a regular first-team place at Brighton and he could be available on a free transfer after this season.
However, the Seagulls could consider selling the former Chelsea academy graduate at a cut price in January in a bid to make some money from his departure.
The Hammers have conceded 19 goals already this season in 11 Premier League fixtures, with the defensive side of the team being something that Julen Lopetegui wants to strengthen.
Brown is under contract with Gent until 2027, which will put the Belgium side in a strong negotiating position.
