Arsenal Sources: Significant William Saliba update tonight

Arsenal are expected to block William Saliba’s potential exit amid interest from Real Madrid, sources close to the club have told Football Insider.

Saliba, 23, is viewed as a crucial part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for the future and he will not be allowed to leave the club under any circumstances.

The reigning Champions League winners and Spanish champions have been looking at the Frenchman as a possible solution to their ongoing defensive issues.

David Alaba, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal have all picked up cruciate ligament injuries, with the latter two players ruled out for the rest of the season.

As a result, they have turned their attention to the transfer market with a plan to replace and improve upon their growing list of absentees.

Saliba’s name has emerged near the top of their list of targets, and he is viewed as a potential long-term solution to establish himself in their back line for the next ten years.

Despite that interest, however, the Gunners view the centre-back in the same vein and Arteta is extremely reluctant to even consider his exit.

Arsenal struggled in his short absence after he picked up a red card against Bournemouth, failing to win either of their two league games during the spell.

In a season in which multiple key players have missed spells through suspension or injury, their lack of strength in depth has become a serious issue.

As a result, former Man United scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider that Arsenal have been looking to improve their depth in defence.

As a result, the idea of losing any of their key players in January or at the end of the season is currently off the table and they will not entertain talks.

Madrid’s interest is long-term and they are not expected to be put off by Arsenal’s stance as they continue to keep a close eye on his progress.

Football Insider reported on 8 September that Madrid scouts have been in attendance at the Emirates to watch the defender.

The Spanish giants are keen to conintue their plan of signing the best players from across the continent after landing Kylian Mbappe in the summer.
