Everton fans are calling for Ashley Young to retire after his performance off the bench in their Carabao Cup defeat against Southampton.

Sean Dyche’s side were knocked out of the League Cup on penalties following a 1-1 draw with the Saints, with goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

However, it was Young who received the majority of the backlash following the game despite having spent just 28 minutes on the pitch.

Fans were left raging at the boss after he decided to take Beto off in favour of the 37-year-old, who went on to miss the decisive penalty after a shocking performance.

Young was sent off in the first game of the season against Brighton, but has featured in all four of the games he has been available for.

This has raised questions among the supporters at Goodison Park, with his performances far from enough to warrant a guaranteed place on the team sheet.

Following a “disaster” display against Southampton, fans are insisting the full-back is “finished” and are calling for him to drop out of the team.

Patience at Goodison Park is wearing thin given their slow start to the season, with zero points taken from four Premier League games as pressure continues to build.

Taking to social media in the aftermath of the defeat to Southampton, fans expressed their frustrations towards Young and the role he played.

Some even went as far as to suggest Young should retire as a result of his dropping performance levels – similar to Ben Foster’s retirement despite having signed a new deal with Wrexham.
