Aston Villa are keen to hand a bumper contract extension to Morgan Rogers after his impressive start to the season, according to the club’s former scout.
Mick Brown, a former senior scout at Villa Park who remains very well-connected at the club and also worked as the chief scout at Man United, exclusively told Football Insider that the 22-year-old has become a key part of Unai Emery’s plans after demonstrating some of the skills that made Jack Grealish so special at the club.
This comes after Football Insider revealed that Villa have set aside funds to use for extending contracts, with Rogers near the top of their list of priorities.
Rogers has started all 11 Premier League games and all four Champions League games so far this season, and has earned himself a place in the latest England squad.
Now, Villa are keen to see that his place in the team is recognised by handing him a new contract to keep him at Villa Park for the foreseeable future.
Brown has insisted that the midfielder brings similar qualities to Jack Grealish as he is willing to get on the ball and drag the team forward.
This ability, it is said, has become a crucial part of Villa’s game, and he adds something different which they would otherwise be lacking.
Aston Villa to hand Morgan Rogers new deal after England call
Brown previously told Football Insider that Villa were given a free run at signing Rogers amid concerns about his attitude, which have now been rectified after his work with Emery.
Now, the well-connected former scout who has a wealth of experience working with players at the top level including over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that Villa have been wowed by Rogers’ level.
“They’re very keen to tie him down to a bumper new deal,” he told Football Insider.
“He gives them something which they don’t have elsewhere because he can carry the ball from box to box and drag them up the pitch.
“He can go past people on the ball and he causes a real threat from the middle.
“Sometimes I worry about Villa because they seem a bit one-paced, but he’s different.
“He’s become a big asset under Emery, and he’s so important to that team.
“When I was at Villa, we had a pretty ordinary side, but we had Jack Grealish who could drag us up the park and turn defence into attack by himself.
“It’s so hard to find a player like that who’s willing to pick the ball up and bring it forward.
“It takes so much pressure off the other players, having somebody who can run forward and then make things happen in the final third.
“That’s what Rogers has been able to do. Maybe not to the same degree as Grealish, but he’s crucial to their energy and being able to transition from defence to attack.”
