Aston Villa told to pull the plug on Douglas Luiz deal after 'shock' - expert

Aston Villa have been warned a swap deal for Douglas Luiz to move to Juventus in exchange for two players “doesn’t add up”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Villa defender Alan Hutton raised concerns that a deal involving Samuel Iling-Junior and Weston McKennie would not represent good value for the club.

As reported by Football Insider, the 26-year-old has reached an agreement in principle with Juventus after the clubs entered advanced talks over a swap deal including a £20million fee.

However, the midlands club have now been advised that Juventus are simply trying to dump players they don’t want on Villa in exchange for their star man.

Hutton claimed the deal wouldn’t represent fair value for Luiz given his status as one of the most important players in Unai Emery’s team.

A swap deal would see Iling-Junior, 20, return to England for the first time since leaving Chelsea’s academy in 2020.

Meanwhile, McKennie, 25, featured in the Premier League during a less-than-impressive loan spell with Leeds United as the club were relegated in 2023.

Hutton insisted that the Englishman would be a good option to bring to Villa Park, but wasn’t convinced by McKennie, insisting he would prefer the club to receive a full fee of £50million for Luiz.

“I like Junior, he’s a good winger, a really good player,” he told Football Insider.

“You can see he’s very gifted technically, he likes running at people and he can make things happen, so I do understand that.

“McKennie, I’m not sure about. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding him for a number of years.

“Whenever I’ve seen him, he’s not been a standout.

“Douglas Luiz is one of the main men and one of the main reasons why we are where we are. If Juventus want to pay upwards of £50million, no problem, that’s money coming into the club.

“When they’re trying to give us two players they don’t want, it doesn’t add up.

“They’re getting one of the best players from Aston Villa, who are playing in the Champions League next year, and Villa are getting two players they just want to get rid of? That’s a shock to me.

“It doesn’t add up for me.”
