Gary Keown is “astonished” by Philippe Clement’s decision to keep starting Cyriel Dessers for Rangers.
The 29-year-old striker has split opinion since arriving from Cremonense on an initial £4.3million deal last summer but has continued to be the first choice in the final third [Fabrizio Romano].
Despite scoring 22 goals in all competitions last season, the Nigerian has constantly criticised for his all-round play and multitude of missed chances, and that has only continued into the new campaign.
Writing via the Scottish Mail on Sunday (3 November, page 92), Keown said: “It is astonishing that Clement continues with Cyriel Dessers up front.
“He’s had two windows to fix this and went for Hamza Igamane and Fabio Silva.”
Philippe Clement to drop Cyriel Dessers at Rangers?
Many fans would like to see Dessers dropped from the Gers’ starting XI, but given the lack of reinforcements in the squad, Clement has his hands tied.
Igamane has struggled to hit the ground running since his move from FAR Rabat this summer, only netting once during the 4-0 thumping of FCSB in the Europa League,
Luckily for Clement, Vaclav Cerny has taken the goalscoring responsibility on his shoulders, notching three goals and an assist in his last two appearances, but that will not last forever.
Dessers’ form has certainly dipped this season, given the fact he is now without a goal in eight matches in all competitions, but the manager really has no choice but to continue with him in attack.
The Gers had the opportunity to sign Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland in the summer, who scored 31 goals in all competitions last term, but even he has just one goal to his name so far this season.
It will be interesting to see who leads the line against Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday 3 November, whether Clement keeps the faith in Dessers or if Igamane is given another chance to prove himself.
In other Rangers news, a journalist has compared Philippe Clement to Pedro Caixinha in a new sack verdict.
