Attacker admits he was 'Relieved' to exit Everton after last-minute loan move

Neal Maupay has admitted he “was relieved” to leave Everton after his last-minute transfer to Marseille in the summer window.

The French forward called time on his spell at Goodison Park in the final days of the transfer window, joining Roberto De Zerbi’s side on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy included.

When news of the move broke, the 28-year-old took to social media to post a video of Andy Dufresne escaping prison in the Shawshank Redemption and the striker has admitted he wasn’t bothered by the reaction.

As quoted by Get French Football News (9 September) he said: “Supporters like to discuss, criticise, and celebrate and it doesn’t bother me because I consider myself a normal person and if everyone can tweet I can do it too.

“I published a funny little video because my situation at Everton was known, I wanted to leave and the club didn’t want to keep me.

“So this little video was to say that I was relieved to leave the club.”

How much did Everton get for Neal Maupay’s transfer?

If Maupay hadn’t been an Everton player, maybe Toffees supporters would have found this reaction entertaining but it really just comes across as rather disrespectful.

The 28-year-old has repeatedly been slammed for his actions off and on the playing field and that will mean that the majority of fans will just be happy to see him off of their books, even if only on a temporary basis initially.

Ultimately, the player, the club and the supporters all got what they wanted. Sean Dyche’s side don’t now have to live in fear of what their outspoken forward could say next and he is instead Marseille’s problem for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully, none of the new arrivals at Goodison Park will act in a similar way off or on the field in the future. It wouldn’t be farfetched to suggest Iliman Nidaye has already done more on the pitch than Maupay managed in his time on Merseyside.
