The summer transfer window may have only closed just over a week ago, but Everton will already have one eye on bolstering their options in January.
Although the Toffees aren’t expected to have loads of money to spend, there is an expectation that the Blues will need to strengthen midway through the season if they want to avoid relegation.
While supporters would be keen to see Sean Dyche add to his attacking talent, the most pressing issue at Goodison Park currently is the lack of depth at fullback, especially after Seamus Coleman’s latest injury setback.
The only alternatives available to the Blues boss at this moment are Ashley Young who has looked out of his depth this season, Nathan Patterson who remains stuck to the treatment table and Roman Dixon who started against Tottenham.
Everton had the chance the bolster their options in the final days of the window as they eyed a move for Kieran Trippier, but the former England international currently remains a Newcastle player [David Ornstein, 22 August].
But a new update may have given Kevin Thelwell and Dyche an opportunity to undo their mistake from the summer in the January window.
Will Kieran Trippier exit Newcastle United amid Everton transfer rumours?
According to The Athletic on Monday (9 September) it is “highly likely” that the 33-year-old will leave St James’ Park either in January or at the end of the season.
Trippier is believed to be “desperate” to play regular football and with that not seemingly on offer under Eddie Howe, he could be available to the Toffees once again when the window opens at the start of 2025.
Given the lack of reliable options available to Dyche at Goodison Park, it does feel as though the former Tottenham man would be almost an automatic starter if he made the move to Everton.
The only question mark will be whether or not the Blues can meet the defender’s wage demands or match Newcastle’s asking price.
It remains unclear if the Toffees will even revisit a deal for the 33-year-old in the new year, but their hopes of getting a deal over the line will have only been boosted by recent developments at St James’ Park.
