David Seaman admits that Jordan Pickford may have a bit of emotional “scar tissue” from the clash between Everton and Tottenham after what he did for England against Ireland.
The Toffees keeper started and kept a clean sheet as Lee Carsley’s Three Lions ran out 2-0 winners on Saturday (7 September) despite having a difficult start to the season at Goodison Park.
Pickford was slammed for his attempt to play out from the back during the Blues’ 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Spurs and talkSPORT pundit Seaman believes that may have influenced his decision-making in an England shirt.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (9 September, 15:41) he said: “A bit more direct football and the chance of turning their defenders and midfielders.
“But it’s a case of mixing it all up, you don’t want people to read you so much, you want people to be unaware of what you’re going to do and I think that’s why Jordan was going so long.
“Plus, like you say he might have a bit of scar tissue there.”
What happened to Jordan Pickford at Everton and Goodison Park?
Pickford has always been great with the ball at his feet and while his mistake against Tottenham was awful, it is one of the only times in recent memory that he has made that sort of error in an Everton shirt.
While the England number one will always have his critics, he has very rarely let down either his country or the Blues and there is an argument to suggest the Toffees wouldn’t be in the Premier League without him.
Maybe supporters will see him play it a bit safer in the coming weeks when it comes to having the ball at his feet, but he will equally be hoping that his backline makes more of an effort to keep his clean sheet intact as well.
Hopefully, any scar tissue that has been left with the squad following the poor start to the season will be banished after the international break.
If Everton want to turn their fortunes around, they need to start winning games sooner rather than later.
