Scott Wright has lifted the lid on why he left Rangers to join League One club Birmingham City, after scoring a late winner on his debut.
Wright moved to the big-spending English third tier outfit last week in a £300,000 deal [Sky Sports, 29 August], and netted a dramatic decisive goal to hand the Blues all three points against Wigan Athletic at St. Andrew’s.
The 27-year-old did start in both of the Gers’ opening two league matches and featured against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League qualifiers, but was a player the club were willing to cut loose as they pursued other targets.
Wright told Birmingham Live about the move [2 September]: “I was getting game time at Rangers but I just felt like it was time for a new challenge for me.
“Once I had spoken to them it was a no brainer. Coming and being part of this project and this journey was something that really interested me.
“I signed on the Friday and it came up on Tuesday or Wednesday, so it really moved at a fast rate, but after having conversations with my family and my wife we thought it was going to be the right step for me.”
Rangers falter as Scott Wright starts with a bang
Rangers fans will not lose a great deal of sleep over losing Scott Wright this summer – mainly due to the more pressing concerns continuing on and off the pitch.
The club have brought in a multitude of new signings, but not too many with prior experience of the league and many who are rather unknown quantities, whilst Celtic look far more settled and far less disjointed – as shown in abundance during Sunday’s Old Firm derby.
Wright is a player Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have seen as replaceable, hence accepting what is a low fee in this era of football, and he has taken his opportunity with Birmingham.
The American-owned Blues have spent an unprecedented sum over the summer for the level they are trying their level best to get straight back out of, which makes it a degree easier to see why Wright made the move.
The memorable goal he scored will help settle him in faster south of the border, but the Gers must now move straight on and look to gel the reinforcements they have.
In other Rangers news, a Premier League manager has called out Koppen and the club.
