'Awful' - Dan Bardell: Every PL club likely to deal with what happened to Everton

Dan Bardell believes the penalty decision that went against Everton at Goodison against Brighton will continue throughout the season.

The Toffees began the new Premier League campaign disappointingly, suffering a 3-0 defeat to the Seagulls.

The clash wasn’t without controversy after a penalty decision on Dominic Calvert-Lewin was overturned by VAR after being initially given by the referee.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes these decisions will repeat throughout the league season.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Bardell said: “It is a problem that is going to transmit across the Premier League season.

I can see why Sean Dyche is upset but it kind of just summed up the day for Everton in the end.

So often in Everton games, the first goal proves to be really important and had they had the penalty the result could have been different.

They didn’t get that and Brighton had their tails up and went on to have a professional performance and finished Everton off relatively comfortably.

It was an awful start but I wouldn’t expect many more days like that at Goodison.

When Calvert-Lewin went down under a challenge from Lewis Dunk, the referee pointed to the spot and it seemed as if that was going to be given.

Given the directive given from the league organisers for the season, there is no reason that it shouldn’t have been given necessarily.

Nonetheless, the match official was sent to the monitor before overturning the decision much to the dismay of the Goodison faithful.

Dyche was left fuming considering that without Dunk’s involvement, the Toffees striker wouldn’t have gone down.

On another day the decision goes in the home side’s favour and they secure an opening day win but it wasn’t to be.
