Henry Winter was wowed by Everton duo Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto as Everton drew 1-1 against Fulham on 26 October.
Despite struggling for the majority of the game, the England international battled hard before Beto came on to steal the headlines with a late equaliser.
Having replaced his teammate with 10 minutes remaining, the 26-year-old rose highest in the fourth minute of added time to salvage a point for the Toffees at Goodison Park.
Writing via his personal blog on Monday (28 October), Winter wrote: “Nines are back in fashion. Chris Wood struck for Nottingham Forest, Erling Haaland for Manchester City, Beto for Everton, Danny Welbeck and Evan Ferguson for Brighton & Hove Albion, Liam Delap for Ipswich Town and Evanilson for Bournemouth.
“Even Darwin Nunez is getting tap-ins. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dom Solanke put in tireless shifts up front, holding the ball, being a target, and battling with centre-backs. Ollie Watkins is a different type of central attacker but so effective. Yoane Wissa too. Arsenal take note.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto crucial to Everton
Sean Dyche is very clear about what he wants from his players, and while the season started dismally, the Toffees look to be back on track with nine points in their last five games.
By no means are Calvert-Lewin or Beto ruthless finishers in the final third, combining for 13 goals in the Premier League over the last two seasons, but they have a much bigger impact on the pitch.
The likes of Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye feed off the work done by their striker at the top of the pitch, and that is exactly what a number nine is asked of in the modern day.
Haaland, Wood, Welbeck and Watkins certainly have very different aspects of their game, stretching the real meaning of what a “No.9” is now, but the strikers at Goodison Park have proven their abilities.
Dyche will need the goals to start flowing at a better rate if the Toffees are to rise the Premier League table, but the current signs are positive.
