Andy Halliday has admitted he has been left baffled by Rangers’ handling of both Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi’s Ibrox exits ahead of the transfer deadline.

Philippe Clement has confirmed that both players will be leaving Glasgow this summer after Cantwell handed in a transfer request and talks were held between the club and Hagi’s agent ahead of pre-season.

So far, neither player has completed a move away from Ibrox and Clyde 1 pundit Halliday believes the Gers will have decreased both stars’ values by making their desire to leave so public in recent weeks.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (12 August, 18:41) he said: “They’ve spoken about trying to get bodies out the door before they bring in, but to me, the way that they’ve gone about that hasn’t been overly impressive.

“Coming out and telling people that Cantwell is desperate to leave and asked to leave, playing Hagi in the B Team, straight away you’re decreasing these players’ value already.

“I think there’s some baffling stuff from the outside looking in, but the most important thing is obviously performances and results and they need one tomorrow.”

Will Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi exit Rangers amid transfer speculation?

It certainly came as a surprise when Clement revealed that Cantwell had submitted a transfer request and while Hagi’s departure was more expected, the timing of the revelation did also seem slightly odd.

The Gers are more than likely just attempting to drum up some business in their assets this summer, rather than decrease either player’s value, but their public approach may well have done exactly that.

Teams will know that Clement’s side are desperate to offload both midfielders and therefore, they are likely going to be unwilling to spend big money to match the Light Blues’ valuations before the end of August.

Rangers may well feel that getting their wages off of the books may be more important in the long run than pocketing a big transfer fee, but their approach over the course of the window has been slightly unorthodox.

It will be interesting to see whether or not it works out for them between now and the end of August.
