Rangers have no choice but to pay “top dollar” to get the right people into key positions at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.

The Light Blues have been losing people faster than they can replace them in recent months, with Creag Robertson’s resignation as director of football operations the latest to emerge [Scottish Sun, 9 October].

That comes in the context of John Gilligan stepping back in as interim chairman after John Bennett had to resign on health grounds, having been attempting to find a new chief executive to replace James Bisgrove who also stepped down earlier this year to depart to the Saudi Pro League.

Prior to his exit Bennett had reached an “advanced stage” of talks to appoint Jim Gillespie as CEO but the St Mirren vice-chair pulled out and the move collapsed [Daily Mail, 10 September], and Ferguson claims “radical” is needed for the club to address the issue of failing to fill top jobs.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “They’ve got to have a radical rethink. When they bring players in it’s well known over the course of the last two or three seasons that a lot of the players are on great money.

“Sometimes with important positions within the club we’ve got to pay top dollar. They’ve got to bang their heads together and make sure when you’re going for these people and you look to bring in these top guys you’ve got to pay them big money.

“That’s something they’ve got to sort out.”

Rangers lose James Bisgrove, John Bennett and Creag Robertson

It’s bad enough to keep losing people from the hierarchy but failing to find replacements months after top jobs become available suggests the club are not an attractive prospect.

The Light Blues never replaced Ross Wilson as sporting director after his exit to Nottingham Forest nearly 18 months ago, but the seven-man football board they implemented instead is set to be down to just three after Robertson’s exit.

Rangers are also without a head of academy since the end of last season after Zeb Jacobs departed to join Feyenoord.

In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi is to head for an Ibrox exit despite the contract stand off finally coming to an end.
