Vaclav Cerny badly needed his match-winning Rangers performance against St. Johnstone but his celebration with Philippe Clement was not something Derek Ferguson likes to see.
The former Gers midfielder said he hates that sort of celebration on Open Goal (10 October) to the agreement of James McFadden, while Gordon Dalziel joked it indicates a player trying to suck up to the manager.
Cerny scored both in a 2-0 win at Ibrox on 6 October to rebound from a miserable few weeks in which he missed glaring opportunities against Malmo and then Lyon in the Europa League and reacted angrily to his own fans against Hibs in between.
Ferguson said (1h 5m 40s): “By God he needed it, so he did… I tell you what he’s an emotional wee fella. This is me, and it’s not a slight on him, but I hate when you see a player score a goal and then run to the [expletive] manager and want a cuddle. I’m old fashioned in that respect, celebrate with your players.
“It’s not my cup of tea, but then this guy, he’s different, he’s emotional, he needed that. But still, within that game, he scores two goals, first one was a cracker, but he still could play better.”
Rangers celebration irks Derek Ferguson, James McFadden
Generationally the dynamics at football clubs are very different and modern managers have had to alter how they deal with their players compared to teams of the past.
Clement appears to have very much taken a supportive stance, regularly backing under-fire players publicly, having also done so with captain James Tavernier.
Cerny came off Instagram after his open-goal miss against Lyon 3 October and admitted following the St. Johnstone win that it had been “tough” in a remarkably frank press conference on 7 October, with Light Blues supporters then criticised for abusing the Czech [Tam McManus, 7 October].
He clearly appreciated the backing off his manager and in the St. Johnstone win it paid off at a time when it seemed sure that the winger needed to drop out of the XI.
A lack of other options has likely contributed as Oscar Cortes’ injury luck has been appalling throughout his time in Scotland, Rabbi Matondo is also still out, and Ianis Hagi only made his long-awaited return to the first team off the bench in the St. Johnstone win, which also saw him sent off and suspended.
If Cerny’s form continues to improve after his double then Gers supporters ultimately won’t care how he celebrates.
His initial introduction at the start of the season had been encouraging so the dip he has suffered since then was made all the more disappointing.
In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi is on the way out of the club despite his return to the first team.
