Tottenham legend Harry Redknapp has warned Ange Postecoglou that the pressure will only increase if his side’s inconsistent run continues.
Before the international break, Spurs hammered high-flying Aston Villa 4-1 before losing to Galatasaray and Ipswich in quick succession.
Saturday’s opponents Manchester City have also been in unusually poor form, losing four games in a row for the first time in Pep Guardiola’s career as a manager.
However, Redknapp thinks that the defending Premier League champions will secure a victory and heap the pressure on Postecoglu, telling BetVictor: “What a game this could be. Two sides who can score plenty, but two sides who’ve been sloppy at the back. I can’t believe Manchester City’s form right now; it shows how much they miss Rodri. I don’t care how good he is, a side with this talent should manage to survive. I think they’ll improve as the season goes on, particularly because I think they’ll be busy in the January window.”
“I can’t make this Tottenham side out either, it’s unbelievable. They get a fantastic win at home to Aston Villa and then go and lose at home to Ipswich the next week! I like Ange Postecoglou, but there’s a lot of pressure on him now.”
“It sounds like Pep Guardiola has agreed a new deal and that’s bound to give everyone a lift. I think City win this.”
Which Tottenham will turn up?
Spurs have been Guardiola’s kryptonite in his reign at the Etihad so far, his City team have lost more games (six) and conceded more goals (22) than against any other opponent in the Premier League.
Postecoglou’s side also started City’s recent losing run, beating them 2-1 in the Carabao Cup fourth round last month.
However, all of the Citizens losses came away from home, they are back at the Etihad this weekend, where they are unbeaten in their last 52 matches in all competitions, including 35 league games.
The Lilywhites have won five, lost five and drawn one match in the league so far this season and there has even been some talk of the manager losing his job, although former Tottenham man Jamie O’Hara was surprised by talk of the sack.
More concerning is the fact that they have only picked up four points from five away matches so far this season and in the last 12 months, the club have only won four of their last 18 away league games.
It is not all doom and gloom for Postecoglou though, his side sit just three points behind London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, who both occupy a place in the top four.
In other Tottenham news, a senior player could be set to leave the club.
