John Wenham expects that Tottenham will be spending “many thousands” by appealing Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match suspension.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the North London club’s decision demonstrates just how much money is involved in the Premier League.
It was confirmed via Spurs’ official website on Wednesday [20 November] that the club had appealed the length of Bentancur’s seven-match suspension handed to the midfielder by the Football Association.
As reported by The Guardian [22 November], “With FA regulations stating that the minimum suspension for aggravated misconduct is six matches the best they [Tottenham] can hope for is a one-game reduction.”
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – still believes the appeal could prove worthwhile, despite a potential “stumbling block” which Spurs face.
“We will have to wait and see if Spurs are successful in their appeal,” Wenham said.
“The most that Tottenham will get is the ban reduced to six matches. Therefore, some people might say why bother? However, if Spurs can get Bentancur back for Liverpool at home, then it seems worthwhile. This also just goes to show how much money is involved in the Premier League.
“All the legal costs involved in this appeal will run into the many thousands. That is just to potentially get one player back for one game. As a result, it shows how much three or even one Premier League point is worth to these clubs.”
Tottenham to spend thousands after appealing Rodrigo Bentancur’s suspension?
Spurs have received some backlash over their decision to appeal the suspension handed to Bentancur. Due to the nature of the ban, some supporters might feel as though Spurs fighting back is not a good look.
However, Postecoglou has defended the club’s right to defend Bentancur. While speaking ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday [23 November], the Australian said, [via Football London, 22 November], “I’m not interested in looks or what people want to make….He’s said he’s made a mistake. We’ll accept whatever penalty comes our way.
“We believe that the first one was a little bit harsh so we’ve appealed that which I think is our right.”
No matter what Postecoglou feels, considering the controversial nature of appealing the ban, and the apparent costs involved, Tottenham will be hoping this decision pays off.
