Peter Grant has admitted he was “surprised” to see empty seats at Ibrox for the clash between Rangers and St Johnstone.

Philippe Clement’s side headed into the October international break with a 2-0 win on Sunday (6 October) thanks to an impressive brace from Vaclav Cerny.

However, there was a smaller-than-expected crowd inside Ibrox because the game had been moved to an 8pm kick-off much to the frustration of Go Radio pundit Grant who was left annoyed by that decision.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (10 October, 54:05) he said: “The seats weren’t full and that surprised me.

“It is a horrible time [to kick off] and Stephen touched on it there, we’ve got to think of supporters and that’s important. I know there was a run on, but was there any other time they could have changed it to?

“It’s a hell of a time to expect people to challenge distances when they’ve got kids at school the next day. That annoys me a little bit because Rangers have worked so hard to get back to Ibrox and you want them to see full houses for them.”

What has happened to Rangers and Ibrox this season?

It does seem ridiculous that the SPFL and the decision-makers north of the border would deliberately move a match to a time that is so inconvenient for players, clubs and supporters.

While the options were incredibly limited as a result of the Light Blues Europa League clash with Lyon, there must have been a better solution for all parties than an 8pm kick-off, especially when the Light Blues haven’t been able to play at Ibrox this term.

Ultimately, that decision will have cost the Gers financially and it isn’t a good look for Scottish football to have empty seats inside the ground. Surely common sense should have come into play to try and find a better time for everyone involved.

Hopefully, Ibrox will be back full once the international break has been and gone. With some big European nights on the horizon in Glasgow, the Light Blues home ground should be rocking once again.
