Liverpool might have ended up coming out on top against Southampton but Jamie Carragher has still questioned one of the big calls from Arne Slot.
Slot looked on as is Reds side almost threw the game away in the second half as Liverpool went 2-1 down and looked like failing to capitalise on Man City’s loss.
However, Mohamed Salah slotted in twice to seal the three points and rescue Liverpool one again.
Salah, of course, has been the main man at Liverpool for some time now and is key to Slot. But one man who is not quite doing the business is striker, Darwin Nunez.
Nunez was given the start today and then stayed on the field as Slot made his first subs around the hour mark.
However, Jamie Carragher was baffled by the manager’s decision, as he questioned what Nunez had done to warrant staying on over Cody Gakpo.
Jamie Carragher stunned by Darwin Nunez over Cody Gakpo decision against Southampton
Speaking on Sky Sports about the decision to take Gakpo off over the ineffective Nunez, Carragher questioned the call from Slot and admitted his surprise.
“I’m surprised it’s Gakpo, would have been Nunez for me. He’s certainly been the most dangerous player, I can’t remember Nunez being involved in one thing in the game,” Carragher said.
“Diaz has done so well as a striker when he’s played up there.”
Slot gets it right in the end
Carragher makes a good point about the lack of impact from Darwin Nunez but at the end of the day, Liverpool won again and Arne Slot will simply say he knew what he was doing.
After all, who is anyone to question the manager who has his team top of the table and looking on course to win a second Premier League table.
On the flip side, there does need to be more from Nunez. Sure, Gakpo didn’t have his very best day either but time and again we are seeing Nunez fail to deliver.
As the season ticks on, he simply has to start scoring goals and helping the team more.
