Bardell suggests Rangers player sale is 'worthwhile' on one condition

Dan Bardell thinks Rangers selling Tom Lawrence could be worthwhile but only on the condition they spend any money raised from his sale wisely.

Turkish outlet Fanatik have reported (12 June) that Besiktas have been in contact about the Welshman after former Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was appointed as their new coach.

This could see the versatile midfielder depart in a move to the Turkish Super Lig with a potential fee being unclear as talks get underway.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has assessed the move suggesting there are positive and negative aspects to the transfer this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “He’s a player that Van Bronckhorst knows well from his time at Rangers, often managers will try and take players they’ve worked before to new clubs.

“Rangers are in a position where they need to keep hold of their better players but it is becoming difficult. They may need to sell players to bring new ones in, such is the nature of the transfer market nowadays.

“If they can utilise the fee they receive cleverly in terms of incomings then it is potentially worthwhile but I would suggest that Rangers want to catch up with Celtic and should keep hold of their better players.“

With van Bronckhorst taking charge of the Turkish side, he will be keen to put his imprint on his squad ahead of the new season.

This is the Dutchman’s first job role since departing Ibrox in 2022 so signing players from his spell wouldn’t be a surprise.

As a result, he has shown a keen interest in Lawrence who featured in a variety of positions under Philippe Clement last campaign.

He didn’t feature after the 2-1 defeat at Parkhead as the Gers fell to a loss that ultimately ended their Scottish Premiership challenge.

Depending on the fee that is available as part of the deal then he could prove to be a useful makeweight for additions across the summer.

Clement has to strike a balance between keeping hold of the core members of the squad while making positive additions which is only possible after sales.

Lawrence is a good player there is no doubt about that but there are good arguments to be had on both sides of this potential deal.
