Newcastle could now sell Trippier in surprise deal - ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United could allow Kieran Trippier to leave the club this summer in a shock twist.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the time is right to “grow and build for the future” by signing a younger replacement for the right-back, who turns 34 later this year.

Trippier is under contract at Newcastle until June 2025 after arriving as one of their first marquee signings under the Saudi-backed ownership in January 2022.

The England international, who will play for the Three Lions at Euro 2024 this summer, started in 35 of his 39 club appearances this term and is widely regarded as a star player at the north-east giants.

It would count as a major surprise were he to leave given his status and significance on Tyneside.

He notched one goal and 11 assists in those outings but faced criticism from Newcastle fans at times and was confronted by an angry supporter after a loss against Bournemouth in November.

Wyness suggested the Magpies should also add a new striker and attacking midfielder in the off-season.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Kieran Trippier might well be gone this summer. They’ve got to get the age of this squad down.

“They need to look at young, talented defenders rather than the biggest stars this summer.

“Trippier did a great job coming in and lending his experience, but now is the time to start growing and building for the future.

“Overall, I think scoring goals will be the key for them.

“Certainly, up front, they still seem weak to me.

“Isak has been brilliant but Callum Wilson has been missing a lot with all sorts of injuries.

“I think they’ve got to add a striker and a number 10 who can also chip in with goals.

“They’ve looked a little bit pedestrian at the back sometimes, so possibly they need to add a bit more speed if possible.”
