Michael Gannon: 'Major Shock' if Rangers player survives Clement cull

Michael Gannon says it would be a “major shock” if Todd Cantwell was to stay at Rangers this summer as Philippe Clement continues to clear out his squad.

The Daily Record journalist has tipped the 26-year-old to be just one of several stars leaving Ibrox this summer, with Connor Goldson, James Tavernier, Tom Lawrence, Kieran Dowell, Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes all potentially on the chopping block.

Cantwell has received mixed reviews during his time in Scotland, having made 64 appearances since arriving from Norwich City in January 2023, and his spell might be coming to an end.

“The big Belgian could be tempted into a total clearout – where no one is safe. You would imagine he wouldn’t mind keeping the likes of James Tavernier and Connor Goldson around to give him at least some continuity going into a massive transitional period,” Gannon wrote for the Daily Record on Sunday (16 June).

“But would he barricade the doors at Auchenhowie if clubs came in for the pair? Doubtful. The Saudi talk around the pair just won’t go away and if some decent dosh is on the table then it would make sense for all parties to bundle it up and wish everyone all the best.

“At this stage, it would be a major shock if Todd Cantwell is alongside them. The writing isn’t just on the wall for the playmaker – it’s on billboards and plastered all over social media.

“At least he’ll see it on the latter. Cantwell is a player – but he just doesn’t look a Clement player.”

Should Rangers bite the bullet and sell Todd Cantwell this summer?

It seems a shame for the Gers to give up on the former Norwich midfielder now, having found his groove under Clement’s leadership.

Whether you like him or loathe him, the 26-year-old holds a lot of potential, something that Clement will be hoping to get out of him if he stays beyond the summer transfer window.

He notched eight goals and seven assists in 44 appearances across all competitions and, while he arguably should have finished with a much higher number, there were promising signs.

The midfielder seems to be maturing much more under the Belgian’s guidance, with fans seeing a change since the manager’s arrival in October. However, it may have come too late to save his Ibrox future.

Clement and Nils Koppen are set to make multiple changes to the squad throughout the summer, so fans may need to expect a very different look come the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

In other Rangers news, the club have been accused of copying Celtic’s transfer model after the latest Ibrox arrival.
