Connor Barron believes Rangers’ performance against FCSB on Thursday (24 October) showed they have enough within their ranks to put up a title challenge this season.
The Gers beat the Romanian outfit 4-0 in the Europa League, which moved them up to 11th in the Europa League table.
Speaking to the Daily Record (26 October), Barron admits the team knows they “can’t stop now” and must ensure this level of performance is carried over into the Scottish Premiership.
“Really convinced [about Rangers title chances]. We need to show more of what we did on Thursday night and we’ll be fine,” he said.
“We know what we need to do. We showed a reaction in midweek but we can’t stop now. That needs to be what we do every week.
“It can’t just be a one-off performance from us. We’re a team in there. The noise on the outside is just noise. That’s not something we can affect. We just need to make sure we do our jobs now, getting three points whenever we play.
“We need to continue this into Sunday against St Mirren. The European game is done now, so we go again, move on and focus on St Mirren.”
Rangers and Philippe Clement need to keep their momentum going
The Gers wowed fans and pundits alike with their 4-0 win over FCSB on Thursday. While they were likely the favourites going into the clash, the fact they won by such a large margin was a much-needed lift to all involved at Ibrox.
Most believed the club would be in for a chance of the title at the start of the term but at the moment, things don’t feel that way.
They’re currently third in the Scottish Premiership and are nine points adrift of surprise leaders Aberdeen, while the gap to Celtic is six – albeit both Old Firm clubs have a game in hand on the Dons.
Last weekend, they had a chance to halve that deficit against Kilmarnock but once again failed to live up to expectations and lost 1-0.
If they managed to triumph over Killie, they’d be in a far better position ahead of their clash with Aberdeen on 30 October.
If Rangers are beaten by St Mirren or the Dons over the next week or so, Scott Allan believes it’s hard to see how John Gilligan could keep Clement in his role for much longer.
