Rangers completing the transfer of Connor Barron shows a shift towards making more home-grown signings at Ibrox, according to Barry Ferguson.

Writing in his Daily Record column (22 June), the former skipper said that he’s been told the club is looking to make at least one domestic transfer per season in a change to their existing policy.

Ferguson believes Barron is a smart acquisition, adding that the Gers side he captained had a mix of big-money signings from abroad and a Scottish “core”, who were familiar with the environment.

He said: “It was good to see Connor Barron checking in. He’s a young player I like the look of and exactly the type of profile I believe the club should be striving to add more regularly.”

“I’m told the club have a goal to bring in at least one homegrown signing each season moving forward, and for me that’s key.”

Connor Barron transfer not the last at Ibrox

Arguably no area of the pitch needs more attention at Ibrox this summer than the middle of the park, with two formerly key names released and a chasm of options opening up for Philippe Clement.

The departures of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack at the end of June necessitated adequate replacements, and Barron’s arrival could see the 21-year-old go straight into the starting XI [Fanatik].

With players like Mohamed Diomande and Nico Raskin to battle with for a place in Clement’s side, Barron’s two full seasons of Premiership experience could give him the advantage.

Furthermore, Barron moving to the Gers – having had the opportunity to head elsewhere – shows that he is ready and raring to make an impact in blue [Rangers club website].

Ferguson’s hope that Barron hits the ground running could come to fruition next season, and the Ibrox faithful will be keen for another Scottish youngster to establish himself in a potentially title-winning team.
