Tom English has been left unimpressed by the post-match comments Philippe Clement has been making about his Rangers team of late, but does not believe he should be sacked.
The Belgian has made many excuses recently as to why his team haven’t performed to the standards expected of them, with some of them striking a nerve with BBC Scotland’s chief sportswriter English.
Replying to a fan’s question about where the future of Clement lies via the BBC Sport website (13 November), English shared his thoughts on the “pressure” the 50-year-old is currently under.
“I think some of these post-match stuff is not impressive. He’s coming across as a guy that’s struggling,” he wrote.
“Compared to the Aberdeen situation, the fact Clement comes in and talks about a rebuild and it’s a long-term project.
“Jimmy Thelin has come in at Aberdeen, it’s a rebuild. It’s a project, but it hasn’t taken long term to fix it and Aberdeen now are putting pressure on Clement.
“But I don’t think there’s anything served by getting rid of him. That’s another manager you’ve got to pay off.
“And who would you get in? These are troubling times at Rangers, but I’m not sure sacking the guy is the right way to go”.
Philippe Clement comments at Rangers under scrutiny
For almost as long as the Scottish Premiership has existed, Rangers and Celtic have been the dominant forces.
However, this season, Rangers are third in the league and at the moment, find themselves nine points behind the Bhoys and Aberdeen.
Their summer window didn’t likely fill fans with much hope, with players such as Robin Propper and Hamza Igamane both having a difficult time trying to adjust to the demands of the Scottish league.
Rangers have never and should never be in a state where they need to rebuild as they’re one of the powerhouses of the country.
Without the Old Firm derby, the Scottish league wouldn’t be what it is today and as other managers around the Belgian seem to be doing better with a much smaller budget, it feels like he’s now just scrambling for reasons why the Gers didn’t win.
Only time will tell what the future holds, but if John Gilligan keeps him in charge for much longer, it’s hard to see how a title challenge from Rangers will come about.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson has shared a “desperate” Derek McInnes admission after what has happened.
