Everton sources have told BBC journalist Shamoon Hafez that they “remain hopeful” of extending the contract of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.
The striker has been linked with several clubs since the start of the campaign but nothing has yet been set in stone.
Writing for BBC Sport (23 November), Hafez shared what his sources have told him about the future of the Englishman.
“His contract expires in the summer and though talks began over a new deal with Calvert-Lewin in May, it remains on the table unsigned,” he wrote.
“Club sources say they remain hopeful of coming to an agreement with the player.”
Everton need Dominic Calvert-Lewin to extend his Goodison Park stay
While the Toffees may have four senior strikers within their ranks, two of them remain sidelined due to injury and Beto is more unreliable in front of goal than Calvert-Lewin is.
The Englishman and the Guinea-Bissau duo have been interchanging with one another regarding who’s leading the Toffees’ attacking line this term but it’s undeniable that Calvert-Lewin is still the Merseyside outfit’s best striker and when he doesn’t play, it’s evident how much he’s missed.
His form in front of goal this season, however, has left a lot to be desired.
Indeed, Armando Broja is set to return imminently, but when his goal record from the past couple of seasons is taken into account, it’s hard to see how the Albania international will have much of an impact on the Toffees’ fortunes this term.
With the 27-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, a decision needs to be made about where the Englishman’s future lies or Sean Dyche will be running the risk of losing him for nothing, which would be a situation Everton will want to greatly avoid.
In other Everton news, Gary Lineker has reacted to a “ludicrous” moment in the Toffees’ 0-0 stalemate against Brentford.
