Phil McNulty has backed Everton to stand by Sean Dyche unless they are “plunged into a dire emergency” this season.
The Toffees boss has once again come in for criticism from both fans and pundits alike after his side were beaten 1-0 by relegation rivals Southampton on Saturday (2 November) at St Mary’s.
While BBC Sport journalist McNulty still expects the Friedkin Group to make a change in the dugout at the end of the season, he admits he doesn’t think Dyche will be sacked unless the Toffees are destined for relegation.
Writing in BBC Sport’s live blog on Monday (4 November, 11:00) he said: “I get the real sense of discontent from Everton fans, not just about results but the style of football under Sean Dyche.
“I fear ambition will be limited to staying up this season as relegation ahead of going into that magnificent new stadium is unthinkable. This is why, unless Everton are plunged into a dire emergency, I think Dyche will stay in charge as he has charted a course to safety before.
“I do not see him taking Everton into Bramley Moore Dock as history tells us billionaires such as prospective new owner Dan Friedkin want their own manager in charge and will harbour wider ambitions than simply safety.
“I do not see Dyche, who deserves respect for ensuring Everton’s safety in the last couple of seasons, as manager beyond the end of this season.”
Will Sean Dyche exit Everton amid Goodison Park sack speculation?
As McNulty suggests, Dyche has been over this course multiple times during his spells in charge at both Goodison Park and Turf Moor when he was Burnley’s manager.
He knows how to keep teams in the Premier League and while some fans may have expected more of the Toffees this season, staying in the top flight is the number one priority for the Blues at this moment in time.
Although the display against Southampton will have raised more than a few eyebrows among supporters, Everton are still in a good position to dodge the drop this term and have shown they are more than capable of picking up points.
Of course, no manager is truly safe from the sack and should the Toffees slip to a position where relegation becomes a genuine possibility, the decision-makers on Merseyside may well have to pull the trigger.
The Blues aren’t at that point yet however so fans will have to be patient over the coming weeks and months.
