Marvin Bartley was surprised to see Hampden Park so empty for Rangers’ Champions League qualifier defeat to Dynamo Kyiv.

The Gers were dumped out of Europe’s elite competition by the Ukrainian side on a controversial night at the national football stadium.

Jefte was sent off after an undeserved yellow card which flattened an already subdued atmosphere with thousands of empty seats populating the ground.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 14 August, Bartley shared his surprise at the low attendance but sympathised with supporters.

The BBC Scotland pundit said: “I didn’t expect to see Hampden the way that it was. I got sent a picture and I could not believe that the game had actually kicked off.

To have that many seats without people in them for a European game, a Champions League qualifier, I never thought I’d ever see that. For whatever reason, extra expenses etc. it could be for that reason but it’s proven an even bigger problem about being away from Ibrox.

“If it’s costing fans more money, football is expensive enough as it is, it was a midweek game so it’s just not a good look at all.”

Rangers lose famous atmosphere with Hampden move

As an opposition side, you know that travelling to Ibrox, you are in for a tough test and nothing is going to be easy.

The fans are close to the pitch and the noise can be deafening at times making it near impossible for players to communicate effectively.

If Dynamo Kyiv had been travelling to Glasgow with that in mind, then Philippe Clement’s side may still be in the Champions League.

Thanks to some poor planning from the Gers’ hierarchy, home games will be played at Hampden until repairs are completed at Ibrox.

There was very little atmosphere to talk of on Tuesday night (13 August) with fans spread out across the 51k+ capacity stadium.

Many supporters opted not to even turn up due to the distance to travel on a weekday night which you can’t really blame them for.

This defeat just goes to show how much of a mistake John Bennett and Co. have made at Ibrox.
