'From what I'm hearing...' - Fabrizio Romano: Rangers in open race to sign PL midfielder

Fabrizio Romano has said that a deal between Rangers and Manchester United for Hannibal Mejbri isn’t close yet.

The Gers have been linked to signing the Tunisia international from the Red Devils as Philippe Clement looks to add to his midfield.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on 14 August, the transfer specialist has suggested that the race for the 21-year-old is open despite interest from the Light Blues.

He said: “There is a concrete chance for him to leave Man United, but nothing close with Rangers yet.

“They like the player, they have tried but there are also other clubs, from what I’m hearing, not only Rangers. So, the race is absolutely open.”

Rangers maintain interest in Hannibal Mejbri

It is clear that Clement is still intent on adding to his squad before the transfer window slams shut.

The Gers haven’t had the brightest start to the season after drawing to Hearts and being dumped out of the Champions League in the first qualifying round.

Featuring in the competition would have provided Rangers with a much-needed financial boost while giving them the pull to bring in further signings.

They won’t receive these benefits, although they still will play in the Europa League which is a silver lining to a frustrating situation.

After spending a year in the Championship with Birmingham City and last season barely featuring for Sevilla, Mejbri may fancy a move to Ibrox.

As competition for Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron, the Manchester United midfielder could be a very useful addition.

It is unclear who else holds an interest in signing the youngster but if Rangers come knocking it may be difficult for the 21-year-old to turn down.

In other Rangers news, one star should never play in midfield again after his performance against Dynamo Kyiv.
