Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Donald Trump’s presidency will be a “positive” thing for prospective owner Dan Friedkin.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed we could see majority ownership of the Premier League’s 20 clubs from the United States during his presidency.
Republican Trump defeated Democrat Kamala Harris earlier this month to secure a second term as president after his first term between 2017 and 2021.
The 78-year-old has talked about imposing tariffs on imports throughout his campaign, a move which could reportedly cost the UK £22billion.
Friedkin, who also owns Serie A side AS Roma and is closing in on a takeover at Everton, is reportedly a five-figure Republican donor.
Trump election ‘positive’ for incoming Everton owner Friedkin, says Wyness
Wyness claimed Trump won’t discourage American investment in foreign sport with the World Cup set to come to the States in 2026.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It does appear Friedkin has made contributions to the Republican Party over a period of time.
“That’s taken care of in terms of his political affiliations.
“There’s then talk of how Trump will view the sports industry with worries about tariffs and trade.
“But with the World Cup in the US coming up, I don’t think any American owners will be discouraged from buying clubs overseas.
“It will just increase the power of America.
“It could even get to the stage where we get to a majority of US owners in the Premier League. Once we’re at 15-16, then you’ve got the voting power.
“In the bigger picture, Friedkin could be in a better position. Overall, I think the Trump result is a positive for him.”
