There’s an air of excitement around Tottenham Hotspur heading into this season.
Spurs may have missed out on Champions League football last term, but there were some really encouraging signs from Ange Postecoglou’s side at times.
Indeed, Tottenham were arguably the best team in England for the first two months of the campaign, and if they can replicate that sort of form once again, they could challenge this season.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Spurs’ pre-season so far, and he noted the encouraging performances of Brennan Johnson in the attack.
The journalist spoke about Johnson’s showings so far in pre-season, and he claimed that Ange Postecoglou has really high hopes for the Welshman this term, stating that the manager believes Johnson could have a massive season ahead of him.
Brennan Johnson could have a big season
Gold shared what he knows about the attacker.
“Brennan Johnson scored a hat trick in the behind closed doors friendly against Cambridge, and another goal in his next 45 minutes of football, so that’s four goals in 90 minutes,” Gold said.
“Postecoglou’s got big hopes for Brennan Johnson, he really feels like this second season is going to be a massive one for him. He’s still only 23, 15 goal involvements last season and I think that’s going to be well above 20 goal involvements, maybe even 25 or 30m I think he’s going to have a terrific season.”
Johnson emergence bad news for Dejan Kulusevski
Ange Postecoglou seemingly has a lot of faith in Brennan Johnson heading into this season, and that may spell bad news for Dejan Kulusveski.
Indeed, there aren’t many free positions in the Spurs attack as things stand, and with Heung-Min Son almost guaranteed to start down the left, Johnson may have to take Kulusevski’s place on the right.
Of course, with Europa League football on offer this term, there’ll be plenty of room for rotation, but if Johnson can impress as Postecoglou expects him to, don’t be shocked if he becomes the first-choice right winger at Spurs.
The Welshman has bags of ability, and there’s a reason Pep Guardiola once called Johnson an ‘exceptional’ player.
